There are many hidden episodes behind Grand Seiko design over its more than 50 years of history. We will introduce a few of them with some rare documentation from that era.

When the first Grand Seiko was to go on sale, it was decided that an emblem will be put on the back of the case, as the luxurious Swiss brands did. The lion emblem is now the symbol of Grand Seiko, but there were other candidates at the time. Along with the lion, representing the will to be the king of watches; there was the sun (Apollo), ruler of the solar system; a bell, that symbolizes the accuracy of time; and a key pattern. The lion was chosen as the emblem in January 1960. Thus, the king of beasts became the king of watches.
